When you make a visit to your grandma’s place you are probably likely to find her sitting in a rocking chair staring out the window through her thick glasses. Rocking chairs have been around for decades and I must admit that it feels quite comforting to rock back and forth while …. basically doing nothing. Although the name might suggest otherwise, the rocking chair is usually typefied by a dull design that adds little aesthetic to its functional form. Mathias Koehler blows life back into the rocking chair and I must say he does so with style.

His concept is very aerodynamically designed. It even looks so ergonomical that I can feel my back-aches curing by just looking at it. Notice also the reading bulb at the top of the chair. It really adds to both the function and the design. I hope this chair goes into production one day, I sure as hell would love to rock in it.
Since I’ve been involved in the world of design, I’ve always thought that good design is the one that combines both “beauty” and “function”.
Sure enough, Mathias Koehler managed to keep both on his new concept of a rocking chair. It has a kind of futuristic look to me, yet the colours somehow bring my memory back to my grandma’s old rocking chair.
So to sum up, I can see beauty, function, future and past all-in-one.
Lovely chair.
